How Turbofan Engines Are Installed?

The turbofan is a common type of gas turbine engine that is implemented on aircraft for the means of propulsion generation. Unlike other types of gas turbine engines, the turbofan utilizes a ducted fan to accelerate air for increased thrust. Sitting between propeller engines and turbojets for their speed capabilities, turbofans are the most efficient when flying at 270 to 540 knots. As turbofans are common engine types for numerous aircraft, it can be very useful to understand how they are installed for the means of various assembly, repair, and overhaul procedures alike.

To install a turbofan engine on an aircraft, one may either use a dolly or cable hoist. For the dolly, ground-handling instructions may be provided on a placard located on the dolly itself, ensuring that specific procedures are met as needed. When operating the dolly, the engine should be carefully lifted towards the engine mount attaching fittings. Once the engine has been lifted, the rear engine mount should be aligned with the mount attaching fittings, and then the engine mount bolts are installed and tightened to a specific torque value.

Cable hoists are the more common method of installing a turbofan engine, and the engine should be placed below the nacelle before the procedure begins. Once positioned, the engine sling can be connected to the engine itself. During the lifting process, all hoists should be operated simultaneously for balance, and the hoists may be used to guide the mount into position for installation.

Once the turbofan engine has been positioned correctly with the aid of a dolly or cable hoist, the final installation steps can be undertaken for attachment. As the first step for completing the installation, a bushing is installed through the engine rear mount and rear mount attaching fitting, and a bolt is then passed through the bushing and secured alongside a nut and cotter pin. On each engine forward mount bolt, a chamfered washer, flat washer, and nut should be installed, and the nut should be securely tightened with sufficient torque for safety. To reach the mount bolts, one may use the forward mount accesses. Once fasteners have been placed, pneumatic ducts are connected from the pylon to the compressor bleed-air duct and all connections are secured efficiently. Once these steps have been met, the dolly or slings may be removed from the engine as well as any related equipment.

Once all dolly and sling equipment have been removed, the fuel hose can be attached to the fuel line from the pylon. A new gasket should also always be placed between the flanges of the fuel hose and fuel line. For the receptacles of the electrical harness and thermocouples, anti-seize compounds can be applied to threading in a small amount. Then, all leads may be connected together before securing the harness safety and connector. As some of the final steps of the process, all turbine control connections are established, and the power control rod is attached to either the fuel control or electrical connection. If all steps have been met and correct installation is confirmed with visual inspection, access covers can be installed and the fuel control linkage and trim is adjusted.

By following the correct procedures for turbofan installation and utilizing the proper equipment, one can ensure their assembly is robust and secure for the means of flight.
