About McDonnell Douglas
McDonnell Douglas was an American company that was known for their aerospace manufacturing and defense contract work. Before its eventual merger with Boeing, McDonnell Douglas produced a number of popular commercial and military aircraft such as the F-15 Eagle air superiority fighter, the DC-10 airliner, and the F/A-18 Hornet multirole fighter.
McDonnell Douglas Corporation was first established in 1967 when McDonnell Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft Company, two prominent aerospace manufacturers, decided to merge and strengthen each other’s shortcomings. As a single entity, McDonnell Douglas combined the defense contractor experience of McDonnell and the civilian market presence of Douglas. In the years following the new company’s establishment, McDonnell Douglas would quickly resume the production of their various civilian aircraft, military aircraft, and defense weaponry.
During the 1980s, McDonnell Douglas diversified their offerings with the introduction of helicopters after their successful acquisition of Hughes Helicopters and Summa Corporation. Before their acquisition, McDonnell Douglas designed a variety of helicopters, their most notable model being the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. After the termination of the A-12 Avenger II program in 1991 and the unsuccessful launch of the MD-11, McDonnell Douglas began to falter as competition strengthened. In 1996, McDonnell Douglas was merged with Boeing, and their logo was used for the development of a new corporate identity for the surviving company.
