About Cessna

Cessna was first established in 1927 when Clyde Cessna and Victor Roos partnered to form the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company. After a month, Roos sold his interest back to Cessna and the Kansas secretary of state approved dropping his name from the company title. On the day of the stock market crash, Cessna earned certification for their Cessna DC-6 aircraft model. Due to the stock market crash, however, Cessna closed their doors. In 1933, the Cessna CR-3 won the American Air Race in Chicago and set a world speed record for its engine size. Years after the stock market crash, in 1946, Cessna reopened their doors and finally returned to production. With their reopening, Cessna was swift to attempt new endeavors, and their first helicopter received FAA type certification in 1955. In the 1960’s, Cessa partnered with the French company Reims Aviation, and three years later they produced their 50,000th aircraft. In 1985, Cessna was purchased by the General Dynamics Corporation, and thus became their subsidiary. 7 Years later, General Dynamics turned around and sold Cessna to Textron. Cessna then continued operation, and in 2007 they purchased Columbia Aircraft and continued production of the Columbia 350 and 400. During the 2008 financial crisis, Cessna faced restructuring, suspending programs and closing certain facilities. In 2014, Cessna ended their operations and production, becoming a brand of their parent company Textron Aviation.
